Thinking of ways to redesign the kitchen in your new home? The search usually ends with the concept of having an open kitchen which adds to the atmosphere of your home. Nowadays everyone seems to be fascinated with the concept of open kitchens with unique style and a modern look. Open kitchens not only make your kitchen area look more broad and open, but also provides it with a large amount of space compared to the traditional form of kitchen. One of the many ways to add to that look would be to choose your kitchen island lighting type. Here I will give you a brief outline of what your choices of lighting are, and how they can complement the design of your kitchen.

Types of Lighting

Using proper lights for your kitchen island can be a complicated job. Firstly one must understand the different types of lighting to be used and also their usefulness. There are three types of lighting to consider:

Ambient lighting: General light that is to be suspended from the ceiling.

Accent lighting: Draws the focus of the light to a certain point of the room.

Task lighting: Installed overhead inside the roof.

Proper lighting gives an ideal look and ambience to your home. Out of these three types of lighting, pendant style lighting is generally the common type that people use.

Pendant Lighting

Generally people judge their house by structure and numbers. So in a big kitchen the use of three pendants on a single line increase the elegance to one’s kitchen. In the sort of kitchen where the dining area is further away from the sink, an additional line of pendant lights could be used. But if the kitchen area is more compact, then the use of two big pendants will suffice, or one can go for a longer string of smaller pendants.

Types of Pendant Lighting

You can get three basic styles of pendant lighting and in addition they provide you with a fantastic level of overall flexibility:

Conventional pendant: These are pendants in which the open end of the shade faces downwards.

Inverted pendant: Inverted pendants are like conventional pendants, except the open end of the shade faces upwards.

Mini pendant: Mini pendants are much like conventional pendants, except they are much smaller in size.

Inverted pendants are often the preferred choice for using above the dining room table or kitchen island. They are capable of providing both overall illumination or are able to create focused lighting, determined by your needs. Mini pendants are also a very good choice, however they require many more light bulbs to achieve the desired amount of light.

There are many different shapes one can find these pendants in, and even many more ways to incorporate them into your kitchen island lighting. Sorting through them all can be a tough and stressful decision, but in the end once you have decided on what will compliment your kitchen, it will be very much worth the effort and time invested, and it will have an added effect on how appealing your home looks.
